From Obligation to Opportunity – Transformation through Sustainability

In today's business landscape, corporate sustainability has become a core focus. With increased media attention, environmental regulations, investor preferences, and evolving consumer demands, organisations must incorporate sustainability into their decision-making processes. As the leading bottled water brand in Hong Kong, bonaqua® has been committed to implementing sustainability initiatives into every business development decision. Following the successful launch of label-less bottled water for individual sale in 2022, bonaqua®  achieved another sustainability milestone in 2023 with the introduction of mineralised water in returnable glass bottles (RGBs). These bottles are now being implemented in the hotel industry to inspire more people to embrace sustainable alternatives and develop recycling habits. This collaboration with the hotel industry aims to increase corporate commitment to sustainability and promote eco-friendly practices within the sector. The introduction of bonaqua® mineralised water in RGBs further reinforces the brand’s dedication to a sustainable future.

Let’s take a look at how bonaqua® has pursued sustainable water solutions throughout the years.
2007
Introduced the first reverse vending machine (RVM) with the “Every Bottle Counts” rewards system.
2010
Introduced lightweight bottles that reduced plastic weight by 30%.
2013
Launched its plant-based bottle, which consisted of a maximum of 30% plant-based materials.
2018
  • Introduced the “bonaqua® water station” in Hong Kong to promote the idea of bringing your own container (BYOC) to further encourage sustainable consumer behaviour. Currently, there are approximately 180 bonaqua® water stations available in various locations in Hong Kong.
  • Introduced in-room filters “powered by bonaqua®” in two partnering hotels.

2019
Enhanced the rewards system to “Tap, Return & Earn” to encourage a broader range of individuals in society to return PET (plastic) bottles for recycling.
2020
  • Started using 100% rPET for all locally produced bonaqua® mineralised water bottles (2L or below).
  • Each 500ml rPET bottle weighs only 11.8g, which is 52.8% lighter than a typical PET bottle.

2022
Introduced its first label-less bottled water for individual sale.
2023
Introduced mineralised water in returnable glass bottles (RGBs) and partnered with the hotel industry for first implementation.
